Khan Telerik
Despite a relatively short reign (768-777 AD), the Khan's actions played a significant role in stabilizing Bulgaria during a period of internal and external challenges. Khan Telerik, the son of Khan Tervel, is perhaps best known for his brilliant diplomatic maneuver in 775 AD, when he outwitted the Byzantine Emperor Constantine V in a masterstroke of deception. Aware that the Byzantine court had infiltrated Bulgarian politics with spies, Telerik sent a message to Constantine pretending that he wanted to defect to Byzantium and asked for a list of Byzantine agents in Bulgaria so he could join them.
Constantine, believing Telerik's story, provided the names of his spies within the Bulgarian court. Telerik then promptly had all of them executed, removing Byzantine influence from his government and securing his rule against internal threats. This bold and clever act is regarded as one of the most notable examples of political intrigue during his time.
