Khan Kubrat
We named our signature Fig brandy after one of the greatest Bulgarian Khans, Khan Kubrat, the founder of Old Great Bulgaria which stretched across modern Ukraine, Russia and Romania. He reigned for 60 years uniting several Bulgar tribes and creating a powerful political entity in Eastern Europe. As the Khan was dying (around 665 AD) he gathered his 5 sons and ordered them to bring a bundle of sticks.
Then he told them to break that bundle in two. When none of the sons could break the bundle, the Khan took the sticks and broke them one by one with his weak hands. The sons understood their father's message: their strength depended on their unity. Khan Kubrat wanted his sons to stay united 'so they never become other peoples' slaves'. Unfortunately, the 5 sons later divided the territory. His son, Khan Asparuh, moved west to the Balkans and founded the First Bulgarian Empire (modern Bulgaria) in 681 AD.
